Server resourse issues

Hi,
we have a HP DL380 running Windows 2003 sp1, this server hosts our erp system (IFS) which runs on a Oracle database ( Oragle 10g )

We have been having issues recently where users cannot login to the database, When i look on the server it appears un responsive and all I can do is reboot the server, once it has rebooted things work fine... this was happening about every 4 to 6 weeks, which although not an ideal situation wasn't the end of the world.. But now this has happened for the past two weeks, and I need to try to figure out what could be causing this to happen. when this happens ( usually on a Saturday ) we get lots of eventid 1053 aswell as eventid 8021 and 8032, I'm pretty sure its a resource issue, memory, virtual memory etc... but whenever i check these they all seem OK. But there must be something causing this to happen.

Can anyone recommend the best cause of action to take to find the cause?

I realise this is a little vague, but any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Regards,
Mick.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but there is nothing in the HP logs that gives any clues to the cause. One thing I have noticed is that oracle.exe is creating lots of page faults, approx 1000 per second, and since the reboot this morning has clocked up 11 million, we have 3 oracle databases on this server one id the production ( this is the one creating all the page faults ) and 2 test systems, these 2 have only racked up 400,00 page faults, but i suppose this could be because there are only a few users using these...

Can anyone confirm whether this is normal for oracle to create so many page faults?

Thanks,

Mick.

I don't anything about Oracle myself but I am sure the other peeps on this forum will do.

Regarding the Page Faults, if this was related to a disk fault causing the page fault then in theory if you try to write large files to the disks this would also cause page faults? You could do some tests dropping some standard large files onto the disks and seeing if this causes a crash / lock up?

Thanks.

Have you tried looking up the Event ID and its Source on ?

Hi
Did you solve this yet. I think I can solve this one for you. Can you send me your init.ora file, server class, memory, etc. and the text of your boot.ini file from /fastdetect onword?
Make sure you check the E-mail notification box below so I see it.
thanks

Be sure to eliminate hardware issues.

Download the most recent Proliant Smart Start CD that will work with your model server from HP. This bootable CD has diagnostics you can run to test the hardware. Your system will be unavailable to users during this time (obviously). If it is an obvious hardware problem, this should help pick it up.

You could try updating firmware, but be sure your hardware passes all tests first. Don't apply firmware to failed hardware unless directed by a L2 or better at HP.
