Hi,

I have a question regarding Oracle Backup:

Is server replication (OS level with the help of a third party tool) a reliable form of doing Oracle
database backup? I am wondering if we could recover the Oracle Database from this replicated server
without ever encountering any problems? By the way, we are running Oracle on Windows NT 4.0.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Remember to treat it like either a "cold" or "hot" backup. If you are not in ARCHIVELOG mode, you'd have to make sure that the database is shutdown cleanly and completely first. If the database is in ARCHIVELOG mode, you can go either way: "cold" or "hot". Again, if you choose "cold", shut the database down cleanly and completely. If you choose "hot", make sure that the tablespaces are in BEGIN BACKUP mode prior to "replicating" and END BACKUP afterwards completion. You didn't mention which "3rd party tool", but you did mention "OS-level", so I'm guessing that it might be prudent to put all tablespaces into BEGIN BACKUP first, take the backup, and then END BACKUP all the tablespaces together afterward. This will be OK if your database is not too busy transactionally. If it is, I think you'll find some problems with this scheme, as the volume of redo logging will increase dramatically.
Hope this helps...
