server problem.. please help

is it common that << insert into...select * from >> command for 20 million records can consume more than a week to process? or there are something wrong with my server.. please advice.. thanx

I'm shooting from the hip, but isn't there a warning somewhere about insert into statements which feed off of select statements going into an infinite loop in MySQL?

Actually I thought the thing was MySQL didn't parse such a statement because of the danger, but I'm fuzzy on the details, and if it's running that wouldn't make any sense.

I'm assuming that's what you meant anyway and not
INSERT INTO....
followed by
SELECT *.....
