Okay, maybe a dumb question or two, but what are Linux servers used with? If people use Linux servers, are they the whole network, or are they used with a Netware, Windows, or Solaris networks to perform some specific duty? Do people only run SAMBA and use them with Windows? Or maybe I should ask, what are they used for most? What is the popular useage? I know most websites runs Apache, is that their main IS function? Just curious.

Use them for whatever.
The bottom line is that what you can do with them is
what you know.
If you need to route a tunneled ipx-ip gateway through
your linux box, there are easier and more expensive ways,
but it can be done. linux, *bsd, etc.. are accessible at the cost of familiarity-which means hard work at learning and
sometimes modifying existing codebases dedicated to that purpose.
