I'm hoping someone could help...

I keep getting a "Server not found" error on my Windows95
machine from Internet Explorer

My Setup: A network w/ 1 Windows 98 machine and 1 Windows 95
machine.
Both have identical Network protocals:
Client for Microsoft Networks
PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP
File and Printer sharing

Both machines can access each others files. (works great!!)
I can access the internet with the Windows98 machine but not w/ the Win95.
The IP addresses are one step down from each other, the subnet is the same 255.255.255.0, 24.259.130.1 on both.

Pullin my hair out

What see is the ip-address a Class A Address but you use a Class C mask. May be there is a reason.

an other Question: Does Ping work?

File and printer sharing may use protocols different to tcp/ip. (UDP or Netbui)

Sounds like a DNS problem, in your configuration if you're not running DHCP Ensure you have the proper DNS server set up in the DNS Tab of the TCP/IP Properties. If you are only getting the error in IE chances are your system can not resolve host names to IP Addresses. One way to verify this is like hnd mentioned, from the Win95 machine, ping yahoo.com, if you receive a response then there is another problem. If you don't...ping 198.133.219.25 (cisco.com) if you receive a response when pinging an ip address then it confirms that you have a DNS problem.

Update us with your results. :) david e

Sobak,

Yup !! DNS settings were the problem on my Windows 95 machine. I configued them...now both machines access the internet, and share files. Works great !! s-)
Thanks !
Shawn

PS: Strange thing is my DNS settings are disabled on
my Windows 98. X-)

Glad everything works now.....I didn't stay too long with the 98 OS, I kept having problems with it so the configurations for Windows 98 are not in my head. One think I've noticed with Microsoft is that they don't keep their configuation settings in the same place from OS to OS. Makes troubleshooting items a little difficult at times. Well I hope you still have some hair left

Have a great weekend.
