I changed the ip address in the hosts file on a netra running 2.6, then restarted it and it seems to be hung. Here are the console messages I can see when I go to it. Server name is netra1.

-----------
NIS domainname is cleanwise
starting rpc services: rpcbind keyserv done.
Setting default interface for multicast: add net 224.0.0.0: gateway netra1
-----------

I don't recognize that address 244.0.0.0 so where is it coming from? What do I do now?

Can you start it up in single-user mode & then check the network files? Specifically, check for /etc/defaultrouter and also make sure /etc/hosts has the correct IP address (or the relevant NIS files).

how do I get this thing in single user mode from poweroff position?

When you start it, do you get an OK prompt?

If not, hit <Stop>A as soon as it's started booting.

At the OK prompt, enter boot -s

yes I figured it out. I am using a console server and telnetting into that from my workstation. Anyway, I think I have more problems. Here is what happens. It's like the file system isn't there.

OK - have you tried running fsck to check all the filesystems?

Can you mountall ?

(questions, questions ... ;-))

If it looks like problems with the actual disks, there's several commands you can run from the OK prompt, such as show-devs show-disks probe-scsi-all test-all
See for more.

Get this ayjaycee, my intention was to change the ip address and move some machines to new subnets. For the hell of it, I moved the machine and turned it back on. Whala it's up and running like nothing ever happened. I don't get it and would like to figure out why it did what it did. It was part of an NIS network but obviously I didn't remove what I needed to get it off NIS. I don't know how to do that. Either way I'm back up. What do you think?

So, the machine's all OK now & back on it's old IP address?

There's quite a few posts in this forum on changing IP addresses etc.

Have a look at thread60-61183 & thread60-62539

There are several ways to do this..

1) Run /usr/sbin/sys-unconfig ( This will take you through the first part of the Solaris install, system identification. Requires reboot. This is safe!

2) If /usr/sbin/ifconfig interface ipaddress ( This is immediate but will reset back when you reboot.)

3) assuming your interface is hme0, edit /etc/hostname.hme0 and insert the new IP address. ( reboot ).

As far as I am concerned #1 is the best way, but if you cannot afford to reboot first do #2 then #3. #3 will make sure the settings remian when you reboot next.

Two other files that you may want to edit is /etc/defaultrouter and /etc/netmasks, if you are moving this machine to a different subnet.

Seem to fit the bill :)
