Server Locks Up when Loading Table 1

I am running SQL Server 2000 and I am having a problem with it.

The entire server locks up randomly when loading data into tables. And when the server locks up, it totally stops responding and I physically have to reboot the server. I have monitored the server at different times when it locks up and I can not figure out anything common that happens.

I am not sure what Service Patch level I am running at, but I'm sure that it's not the most recent (I haven't applied any patches for over a year). I am thinking that a good start would be to apply the most recent service patch and see if that fixes something. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to apply the patches? Has anyone encountered any problems after applying the service patches?

Thanks!!

The latest service packs are relatively easy to install. We have not experienced any problems related to service pack upgrades. However, I've noted problems in mentioned in these forums and elsewhere. Perhaps, some other members will provide some insight.

I do recommend upgrading as soon as you can. The latest service packs fix some severe security vulnerabilities and other defects in SQL Server. If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.

Thanks for the feedback. I have applied the SP3 patch and it seems to be working. I am having one issue with the Agent not starting (I have made another post to see if anyone can provide any assistance). But hopefully the patch will fix the server lockup issues I was having before.
