Server Interchanges during production hours 1

Does anyone do server interchanges during your production hours?

Every once in a while I will have a problem with my NTP source and the time on the PBX will start to drift. It only takes a couple of days and it can get off significantly.

I really hate this issue, because as far as the office staff is concerned, "The world is falling apart", because the time on the phones is different than it is on their computer. Once it starts to drift, I get 20 helpdesk tickets to get it fixed.

Doing an interchange always seems to fix the problem. All I have to do is get the standby server right, and then interchange and I am good. I then work on the new standby to get it right.

The other consideration is CMS, and it fouling up the interval...

Thoughts????

I wouldn't do time changes during the day. I would come in early or stay late to do it. But thats just me...

Here is an interesting note...

I changed the NTP time servers on my standby server during the day yesterday. About an hour later, the active server changed the time (it was off about 2.5 minutes). I never did anything to the active server at all. It was just weird...

I have changed the time on both the A and B servers during the day without any issues. I didn't need to do the interchange as I have access to both servers via the web portal. It is a pain as it is a manual process but is pretty safe.

I know there is a new load to upgrade to if you're at CM 4.0.1. You may look at upgrading CM.

I know, but I can't right at the moment. There are a few "bugs" in 4.0.1 that I am exploiting at the moment. They are known bugs now to Avaya, but when I discovered them, they were being talked about in any of the bug fixes.

I rarely have problems with time on the server, but every once in a while (about 3 times since we upgraded in October 2007) we have a problem. I have never put in a secondary or tertiary time server, so I hope that does the trick.

What I really want to know is, does anyone actually interchange during production hours. I have never done it on purpose. The system has interchanged for various reasons, just like it is supposed to, but those have always been outside of production hours. I am lucky that my system is only in production 12 hours a day.

It can be done, and it won't cause a problem %99 of the time, it's just a better practice to do it after hours, if you have a choice.

It won't cause a problem as long as your status is "yes, on, up". The most common issue is if anyone is in ASA to the active server, the interchange will knock them out. They will need to reconnect.

Interchange will automatically cause a reset 1. This will cause loss of CMS interval report. CDR reports for that time will be off. Calls in progress will stay up, calls being setup will drop. For a full description of all things affected by reset 1, you can check the maintenance manual on support.avaya.com website. Your better off fixing your ntp source.
