on sun servers each server has it's own unique ID which is often used for licensing, does such a beast exist on W"K intel servers and how can I find out what it is

Yes, it is called a Product ID. You will find it int he registry at

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion|ProductID
