Hello,

I am trying to understand the difference between the server's hostname ("hostname" command) and the lables on the network interfaces that can be assigned together with the IP address via SMIT->Communications Applications->TCPIP to the ethernet adapters. One of the fields in the "Minimum Configuration and Startup" screen is also called "Hostname".
My question is - does it have to be the same as the name of the server on the network? What happens if I have multiple ethernet adapters in the server and they all patched to the same network?

Appreciate any input.....

Hi,

Please refer to:

Also:

1.You use the "minimum config" only for configuring your main network interface.
It will then appear in the /etc/hosts with your hostname next to it.
More net interfaces can be added using "further configuration" in smit. This process will not add them to /etc/hosts.
However, you can add the later maulay with vi,giving them different names then your hostname.Example:
10.4.27.195 timna10 #Your main en0 interface
10.4.27.196 timna10_en1 #other en1 interface
10.4.27.197 timna10_en2 #other en2 interface

You can use these later for static routing.Otherwise you would not need these entries in the /etc/hosts.
