Server Hiccup

I have a server 2008 domain with about 15 users. it's set up with DHCP, DNS, AD, file services and everyone is connected via a gigabit switch.

all user's 'My Documents' folders are redirected to their private area on the server for backup/redundancy purposes.

Once a day, everyday of this week since i installed the server, the server does some sort of hiccup. no error messages or problems listed in the log report. just everyone's connection drops out of the blue. they can't 'synchronize' their files and the only solution is to reboot the server and all the workstations (the hiccup causes all the PC's to freeze and not respond).

What in the world is going on? this client can't have the server hiccup once a day and kick everyone off and my @ss is on the line. What should i be looking for?

What errors do you have in the event logs on the workstations?

Is it happening at the same time? Can you run a packet capture/sniffer and then look for abnormal activity at that time?

It seems very unlikely that any single "server hiccup" would result in all of your workstations locking up. It's entirely possible that it is a single device that is doing something to cause network issues, either due to fault or malware infection. The next time it happens, try shutting down all of the workstations one at a time, checking after each shutdown to see if the problem is resolved. You also might want to unplug the switch from it's upstream connection (which I'm assuming is a firewall or some sort).

I have the same problem as well at times. Our file server is server 2008 which is also a domain controller and there are times where it stops responding. You can tell the computers to resync and it picks back up but other times I have had to go and completely reboot the server.

I noticed today when i had to reboot it that it said the reboot finished some server upgrades.
