The hard drive on our server crashed. :( We have an external backup which has the GM data file and program file. Is there anyway I can open the GM data file that was on the server (Windows Small Business Server 2003) on my local GM install.

We are a small company and decided we don't want the extra expense of server tech support. We were using GM Premium Edition version 8.5.1.12 June 2009.

We exported most of the data we needed prior to the crash, but there is still some information that we would like to extract.

I know that Premium has to be installed on a server; I guess I am hoping there is some kind of a work around so we could have at least one user access our GM information. Can the data be saved down a version?

I can't help you with the GM Premium software...

But have you checked the server hard drive to see if it is still running? Maybe try attaching the server hard disk to a working XP system, and see if something like GetDataBack will allow you to see the data you need.

See:
The trial version of G-D-B will allow you to check to see if the data is still there, but to recover it you'll need to buy the full version. Many posters on this site have successfully used this software, including myself.

If, however, the server hard drive doesn't spin up or isn't detected by the BIOS, then the drive is probably dead. Data recovery companies (probably fairly expensive) may be able to lift off your data for you.

Hope that helps...
