I have a Windows 2000 server that hangs whenever any type
of data transfer takes place. I have replaced the memory,
processor, mother board, network card, ide cables, Hard
drives, video card, and I have reloaded Windows 2000
server about 4 times. I have tested the data transfer
using a crossover cable directly connected from one
machine to another machine. I have tried different hubs
and different cables. The server still hangs during the
copying of data from one Hard drive to the Hard drive on
the server. Now this is the interesting part. I used to
always get the files and copy them up from a client station. I decided to put the files on the server from another work station. The server still froze up, but the client workstation continued and
in fact completed the putting of the files on the server.
The server runs perfect, just as long as I do not start
any type of data transfer, or try to access data from a
client workstation. Has anyone else ever had this problem
before. This justy boggles my mind, because I don't care
what environment, whether I am on site or bring the server
back to my shop the same problem occurs. I attached a second drive to the serve and tried to copy the data from one HD to another HD and of course the computer froze up but it seems to still continue to copy the data. I had to restart the machine after this. The next thing I tried to do was create a new folder on the same HD that the data exists. I then copied all the data from the root of C drive to this newly created folder. No problem at all coying the data, no freeze up, nothing. Even the screensave, flower box screensaver pumped up to the limit, could not cause the machine to freeze up. It seems that the problem comes when data transfer happens going from one device to another device. It feezes duing a tape back up and it freezes when people start accessing the server for data. Is there anyone out there that might be able to give me an ideal. I have tried everything under the sun.
