server frozen

I have a NT 4 server. This morning, the server was frozen and no one could access it on the network.
I rebooted and it was ok. I checked the event viewer and came upon this message "Access to performance data was denied to ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||@ as attempted from C:\WINNT\system32\patrol\bin\patrolPerf.exe" Also: C:\WINNT\system32\patrol\bin\TopProcs.exe
I got this error a few hundred times every minute during the night.
This has also happened a few weeks ago.
Please help.

Did you search the net to see what those two files are for?

They look like third party files to me....
