Is anyone aware what would cause this error?

server error. CrystalEnterprise.Smtp: SMTP_E_COMMAND_NOT_IMPL(502)

I have....

1) Used telnet to confirm a good server config.
2) Tried with and w/o authentication in job server SMTP setup.
3) Confirmed the report will schedule and run correct w/o smtp enabled.
4) Used an outlook express client on the same CE server to access the smtp account with the username and password established for CE to use in smtp.

Crystal website makes no mention of this code 502, and the white paper makes no mention of it.

I can only figure out that 502 is a generic code in the smtp error code base that signifies something??? But what?

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I'm not sure if this will help or not but you have to use a valid mail format for the From and the To. For our From we use CrystalEnterprise@companyname.com. If you don't use this type of format you will get errors (possibly the one you got above).

Are you choosing your own From and To or are you using a system default. Also, you have to ensure that SMTP is enabled.

Regards,
Bessebo

I have confirmed that the proper format is used for the to: and from: and that SMTP is enabled on the report destination and the job server.

Thanks for the idea.

Crystal Decisions doesn't document a number of FTP or SMTP error messages. This is probably due to the fact that a number of these errors are actually specific to the web server, not Crystal Enterprise.

In your case the error returned by Crysal Enterprise is a variation of the standard STMP reply code 502 - Command not implemented, which indicates that your ISP mail server did not recognized a command sent.

Please post your server information and configuration (including SMTP domains) as well as your SMTP server settings (please do not post user ids or passwords).

It might be as simple as changing your domains to use HELO instead of EHLO, but the additional information will help us to troubleshoot your issue.

The mail server resides on an esoft instagate appliance.

The domain is: afi-tools.net
I set up a user name and password for CE to access
The only SMTP setting options only include an optional ISP server and authentication if required (I have not enabled or use this).

I have been using this mail server successfully with a 3rd party fax server, and also general busines email without any problems.

Thanks.

While I'm not familiar with InstaGate firewall appliance configuration, I'm sure that its not one of the supported platforms for Crystal Enterprise, either as a firewall or as a web server.

Check out the following KB article from Crystal Decisions:

Does the mail server itself reside on the application(as an optional plug-in) or does the application simply pass commands (as allowed by the firewall configuration) through to the actual web/mail server?

There's a hotfix that may resolve your issue, but then again it may not (pertains to email filtering):

Well,

After learning more than I really wanted to know about SMTP servers and such..... I finally was able to use my webhost email server to successfully send the report as in destination.

Some final thoughts...

1) The CE dialog with the mail server must include some commands that are not compatible with our Instagate setup. Since the Instagate server is working well, I don't want to mess with it.

2) CE suggests using the virtual SMTP server in WIN2K, but gives no information how to set it up properly. I tried the little self test, but was unable to log on as a user, so I gave up, especially after reading all the information on configuring to a domain, and adding a connector for sending.

3) I tried the simple login for our webhost email, that I have had problems in the past connecting to, and viola, it worked.

Thank you all to who replied. Your responses kept me digging in the right direction.

I am also experiencing the same error "COMMAND_NOT_IMPL(502)" with CE. CE is running on a Windows 2000 server with SMTP enabled and functioning. I have tested the SMTP service with a small VB Script.

I guess I'm not really sure what I need to do to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Russ,

This was a year ago, and I have not had to touch it since, so I will not be any help.

If you know for sure that SMTP is working on your machine, then it may be some other issue about the command that an earlier post suggests.

I don't want to mislead you, but you may want to think about using another SMTP host, like your ISP or webhost if you have them available. At least for testing you will be able to see if it is your SMTP setup or not.

Russ -

Post the details of your implementation. What version of CE, for example and what you have done to configure CE for SMTP. Do you have the white paper that explains how to set up SMTP mail in CE? Are you using ePortfolio/webDesktop out of the box, or have you customized anything?
