Hi all - I've spent some time reading this morning about domain/server renaming. The reason is this site has a 2003 server that had a pre-win2000 name used for the server and the domain. eg servername servername.local has srvnam and domainname.local has domnam. I've got by like this but I thought it'd be nice to get rid of them if possible and avoid things like errors on client pcs saying can't execute \\srvnam\netlogon GPOs. I raised forest & domain levels to native 2003 then found you need more than 1 DC to rename the domain so gave up.
But now I can't find a way to rename just the netbios name of the server. I don't want to rename the server then back again using "my computer, properties" just to get rid of the netbios name (maybe it won't even help?) but I'm about to as I've no other ideas :(

A DC cannot be renamed without first demoting it.
