General quaetion : Do website architectures tend to have SQL server installed on the same pc as say windows server and coldfusion for example or is it common to have these different servers on their own dedicated pcs. What is the technical name for such a network?

you tend to have an application , web, data, SQL servers respectfully. We belly up SQL, VSS, Rational and a couple others database applications on our SQL server.

Depends a lot on your users and their processing needs, storage nedds, etc...

Typically the most secure and flexable solution will be to have the database server seperate from the web server. This way as the site grows the database load doesn't impact the web server, and the web server load doesn't impact the database. Also with the database on a seperate server if you need to install a second web server to increase performance or capacity if the database is on the web server you now have a dependancy between the web servers when there shouldn't be one.

And not only performance issues... Generally speaking, having the web server and the sql server on the same box can also cause major security issues, so it's recommended not to have them together.

Though if you're a really small shop, you might get away with it. Depends a lot on your expected connections, your security set up, your data input & outflow, etc.
