Is there a ball park figure that someone can tell me regarding the amount of users an Exchange server can hold.
I have Exchange 5.5, SP4 currently with about 150 mailboxes but maybe looking to double that and want to know if I will need a second server.

The server is a Dell PE 2450 with 750Mhz and 1G of Ram and 46G of disk space.

I do have a second server running the IMC and Outlook Web Access but no users are on that server which is the way I want it.

Thanks for your help!!

I have seen Exchange servers with over 1,000 users. They were using IMC on same server.

Your kit will easily hold it but your weak point is likely to be the netcard. Suggest you look into that.

Upgrading to W2k gives a big speed improvement, but I have yet to benchtest Ex2000 against 5.5.

I manage four Exchange 5.5 servers that have a little over 300 people on each one and I have not had any performance issues with the servers. One thing to note though, make sure that you are running Exchange 5.5 Enterprise Edition if you need your information store to grow over 16 gigs. If you hit 16 gigs with the regular version of Exchange, the information store service will stop.

One more thing....How do I know if I have Enterprise or Standard. I am pretty sure I have Standard, but is that possible since I have 3 servers in one site? Thanks again.

Check the Application Event log on your Exchange server for Event id 1217. If it reports 'Information store with unlimited storage capacity enabled.' then you are running the Enterprise Edition.
