When I'm using any application (Acrobat, MS Word,
Outlook) and I try to open a file when I click on the
down arrow button in the "open in" box nothing happens
for a loooong time. Sometimes it will come back and I can
navigate through my hard drive. Other times it gives me
an error message that says "server busy ... switch to the
application ..." i then have the choice of clicking on a
button to switch to, retry, or cancel. If I click on
switch to it open the start menu. If I scroll through the
programs and then go back to the open file dialog box in
my original application it usually give me the same error
message until I do this for a few times.

I've also noticed that browsing my hard drive in file
explorer is also very very slow.

I checked my event log file i see errors from DCOM and
Service Control Manager.

The DCOM error is:

The server {A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811} did not
register with DCOM within the required timeout.

If I search my registry for this server
(HKCR\CLSID\A1F4...) I see that it's the svchost and the
ProgID is WiaDevMgr.1

The Service Control Manager error is:

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service terminated
unexpectedly. It has done this 69 time(s).

So I'm stuck here. Can someone please help me eliminate
this most annoying error.

Thanks,
Dave

I used to work in PC support so my first instict is to ask if you've rebooted the PC. I know it's the classic line, but it may just be that a process has fallen over.

If a reboot didn't/doesn't work...

That CLSID you quoted ({A1F4E... ) refers to the WIA service, the description for which is "Provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras."

Do you have a scanner/camera etc connected? If so, try disconnecting it and trying the "Open In" drop-down list again. If that fixes it then it may be worth reinstalling the driver for the scanner/camera etc you disconnected.

Have a look at the first article as it is relevant to WIA errors.
