Well just did the exam this morning.

160 questions with 165 minute time limit since a beta.
Finished it in about 1hr 15.

Not sure how well I've done at all since you don't find out for two months while they normalize the results.

Haven't done a CompTIA exam before but found it very like old style MS tests. More a test of memory than anything else really. That and remembering that the first thing to do in pretty much any situation is do a backup and / or read logs. Doesn't exactly prove much.

Some questions I did find pretty tough though mainly because of the wording. What I would do in the situation described and what they probably want as the answer differ a lot.

Oh well, I didn't pay for the exam at least so no real issue if I fail it.

ntinlin,

I believe that Pearson Vue is offering the Server+ Beta for $75 in the U.S. Were you able to have someone else pay for it or did you find a testing center offering the exam for free?

I too took the beta exam on Friday. I really up in the air as to how I did. I had about ten questions marked when I was done that I went back to. I find it silly to remember SCSI speeds, cable lengths and bus widths when the skill should be how to find and use the information. But I guess there is a need to show you know the difference.
Did you take the time to make any comments? It took me all but 15 minutes of the alloted time. I tried to comment when I thought I new what they were after but didn't go about it in a straight forward manner. I guess it will take a couple months for them to figure out the test results.
As an answer to Wishdiak the server+ beta exam was $75.00. Comptia was offering some vouchers for $75.00 which made the exam free.

Hi Wishdiak,

I got exam for free via HP, sort of. They'd mentioned the Beta exam in a newsletter and I had a look at CompTIA web page. Then downloaded the webcast presentation which said anyone that attended got a free exam voucher as long as they filled out a small survey. I e-mailed them and got a voucher to be used by 15th. Although it was supposedly only for people that had been 'invited' to view the original webcast.

Leftout -

I know what you mean entirely. Think I mucked up the fastest external connection for instance. I put firewire when should probably have been USB2. However they didn't specify which Firewire and it could have been firewire 800 instead of 400 in which case I would be right.
I left a LOT of comments about unclear options in questions, unclear objective of the question etc.

One that really annoyed me was asking which of the following were peer-peer file sharing networks. Gnutell, edonkey etc. NOT something that a server tech is going to have to know surely. Desktop perhaps at a push but not server.

I can see some point in knowing about cable lengths, scsi versions etc. if you don't have quick access to a net connection. i.e. A 3.5 metre cable with an SE device might give problems.

They said it would take a couple of months to sort everything out and normalize the results so I guess we'll hear by Christmas.
Not bothered if I don't get it really since I'm already an HP Proliant APS but these things are always useful on the CV.

Looking at the normal CompTIA exams they seem a bit overpriced for what they cover and the depth they go into.
