Hi,

I've just started at a centre which has a Windows 2000 Server setup with Windows 2000 workstations. However, one of the workstations is Windows 2000 Advanced Server, but not set up to control anything. Is this going to cause unforseen problems?

Will this server interfere with the running of the network? It has been logged in with a normal user account and has a manual IP address which links through the main server.

Thanks in advance...

If it's not actually functioning as a server, there's no problem. I used to use server as my workstation OS. The only drawback is the huge waste of money with licensing it vs. XP.

TECHNICALLY, even if it is running server services, you COULD use it as a workstation, but I wouldn't advise it. Servers should ONLY perform the functions of a server (if they are functioning as one to begin with). When you start letting people work off servers as workstations as well, you increase the chances of the server failing and bringing down everyone else using that server (again, if the machine is running a Server OS but NOT serving anything, then it's not an issue).

Thanks - At the moment, this place I've started at has so many things that need 'correcting' that I'm dealing with one thing at a time until I can get it working smoothly. Will be removing that computer from there in time but need it working in the short term until I get a replacement :)

Thanks for the reply!
