I have a server running slackware 10.2
a linksys router wrt54g
the last few days the router seems to be acting up
the server has a static IP address not in the DHCP range of the router.
The other machine conencted to the router cannot get an ip address until I either reset the router OR disconenct the linux server from the router.
This leads me to beleive that the server's netowrk card is the problem but I am not sure how to verify this. Can anyone give me a hint of what to try next?

Is your Linux system running a dhcpd? Maybe they are both answering the DHCP request.

I think I jumped the gun that it was the linux box. right after I posted all of this everything went crazy again. I tried disconencting the linux box and nothing was working. Used a different router... and all was good.

ok I am stuill having the problem
the new router works longer but not perfectly.
i do not have dhcp setup or configured to run on the linux server.
Now I am at a loss

What are the exact symptoms? Is the link working, and then it stops? Which system(s) stop working? Have you tried using static IP addresses instead?

the problem is that the workstation loses its IP settings.
If I reset the router then it appeares to work fine.
Now I was going over the problem and the router is a few years old and the replacment one I am using is even older. The older one I have because the person before had to keep restting it because their wirless stopped responding. Since I am not usuing the wireless function I was hoping that I could use this router no problem. Perhaps it is something with the router itself.

Regardless of the router's behaviour it's strange that the workstation should lose its IP settings unless they are offered on a very short lease. What operating system is it? If it's Winsomething it may be worth asking in the appropriate forum(s).
