One of my Netware 5.1 SP2a servers is abending when Arcserve goes to backup this server. It has happend the last two nights so I went and checked the Abend.log and found this info:

The CPU encountered a problem executing code in Survey.NLM. The problem may be in that module or in data passed to that module by a process owned by Survey.NLM.

I also checked my Arcserve logs and couldn't really find anything that would be the cause of the backup failing.

I am not sure what to do in this case, but I would like to resolve it because it is failing my server backups. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Patch everything. Bring the server up to sp4. I found a couple of problems with SP5 and Compaq servers, and do not recommend it without careful considerartion of the possible problems.

Check for any arcserve patches for your version/patch level at support.ca.com.

Apply all patches from Compaq, or use the SmartStart CD. Survey is a Compaq NLM, and periodically looks at the system and writes to a log. If you don't use it, or don't use insight manager, there is no sense in running the nlm and allocating resources to it.

The other option is to comment out survey and don't run it. I would advise patching even if you decide to not run Survey.

I had a very similar problem about 6 months ago. Our server would abend during backup(at night) and the next day no one could log in. It turned out that one of our NLM's needed an update. I think it was klib.nlm.

You may want to look for an update to the 'offending' NLM.

Thanks for the responses. I actually found the update for the NLM and a workaround issue as well. In addition I am going to upgrade to SP4 and see where that takes me. I'll keep you all posted.
