As far as I know, Server 2008 R2 only supports 64 bit.

My laptop is Windows 7 pro 32 bit. I want to learn Server 2008 R2. Can I run Server 2008 R2 on my laptop using Virtual PC?

If not, can I run a Server 2008r2 on a 64bit Windows 7 pro?

Windows Server 2008 R2 is x64 only. If your laptop was x64 then yes you could run Windows Server 2008 R2 as a VM under it.

I don't think that it does. VMware Workstation does.

Thanks Denny. That's exactly what I need - VM Workstation.

What I will do is to get a 64 bit Windows 7 Pro machine first, and then install VM workstation. Then I can use WM workstation to create a private network, which includes one Windows 2008R2 as the Domain Controller and two Windows 7 PCs. This way I can test out Server 2008 R2 before I implement it for real. Am I on the right track?

Just verified that Windows Virtual PC running on Windows 7 x64 edition still does not support 64-bit guests.

I'm assuming that VMware Workstation would, and I would hope that the free VMware Server product does. You might want to look into that before shelling out for VMware Workstation.

VMware Server also does support x64 guests on an x64 physical machine.

Seaport you are on the exact correct path.

Actually, 2008 Server comes in both 32 & 64 bit - on new servers only (at least from Dell). The upgrade to 2008 is 64 bit only.

The question isn't about 2008, which comes in 32 and 64 bit versions from everyone. It's about 2008 R2, which is 64 bit only.
