My Windows Server 2008 Standard restarted itself yesterday morning after installing some "Automatic Updates" and couldn't come up after. Once I found out about there was an issue, it took me a while to get over there to fix whatever could be wrong, I finally arrive to my server attempting to apparently install 3 MS Updates at 0% progress.
I tried restarting several time only to realize that no matter what I did, none of the services would start. There were only what seemed to be the core services and that's it. I spent about three hours just looking at all of my event log's, which didn't even really have any errors at all, and comparing the Event ID's and what little error messages there were to the web. To make things worse, every time I tried to restart the server, it took FOREVER!!!!
I finally called Microsoft Support for this 2 minute fix to this lovely problem that is known to them but not been released as a Documented issue. So I hope that you never have to look for this, but here is the answer;
Start your server in "Safe Mode" or in my case "DSRM" and start regedit, go to "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler". Find the "DependsOnService" key and make sure that there is no "http" value.
Hope this helps...
