Hello forum:

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why Server Manager is dropping an error:

"The MMC Failed to create the snapin.

It may not have been installed correctly.

CLID:{ID}"

The Server Manager was working perfectly prior to updating the server. I pushed my updates via SCCM 2007. I discovered .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 installed itself AFTER .Net Framework 4. The install overwrote some registry entries that blocked almost all mmc snap-in's from working. (Services.msc was the only one that worked).

If you are experiencing this problem. Try uninstalling .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 from the Programs and Features menu. You CAN re-install it over .Net Framework 4. I verified this on 2 difference Server 2008 Enterprise Servers.

I am facing a very similar problem, in that Server Manager refuses to load. Unfortunately, the only error message that I am receiving is "An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist" This message does not appear to be accompanied by any entry in the event logs.

I have spent the better part of a day looking for a resolution and the closest thing I found was a recommendation to run an update and readiness tool and look in the CSR logs for corrupted or missing KB files. When I run this application, the log file is clean (no missing or corrupted entries found).

I am NOT running .net 3.5 SP 1, but rather .net 4. From what I can tell the server installed .net 2 and upgraded it to 4.

One of the last things that was done before the system "broke" was adding the IIS-6 (compatibility) features required for an install of my primary server application.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I may even look for the associated error to have a chance at correcting this?
