i Just want to clear something up with the licencing. If i have one machine with 2008 on it plus, say 2 virtual servers as well how many licences do i need? I had read somewhere that you only need one licence for the actual cpu not for the virtual machines. So One CPU One licence, is that anywhere near correct?

Regards
Max
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

No. All of your questions are answered here:

If you're running Windows 2008 Standard edition, you're allowed to run 1 physical and 1 virtual instance on a single server.

If you are running Windows 2008 Enterprise edition, you get 1 physical and 4 virtual instances (the same as with 2003 R2). For your 4 virtual instances you can run 2008 Enterprise or Standard, or any previous version of Windows Server Enterprsie or Standard. As with Standard, you (generally) have to run them all on the same physical server.

If you are running Windows 2008 Datacenter edition, you get the 1 physical instance and as many virtual instances as you want on that same physical server.
