I have just installed Windows 2008 64-bit edition. I can ping my gateway, I can ping the internet but I can not ping my Windows 2000 Server. Funnily enough, the Windows 2000 Server can ping the new 2008 server.

Any suggestions, it has me absolutely stumped.

Are you pinging it by IP address or host name, have you tried with the 2008 firewall turned off?

Yep, firewall is turned off. Wouldn't make much difference anyway.

Windows 2008 can ping the gateway and the internet, but it can't ping the 2000 server. Yet the 2000 server CAN ping the 2008 box.

Well it would if it was filtering the echo request.

What's between the two servers?

and how are you pinging the 2000 box...IP or host name?

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

You need to enable and configure your firewall on your 2008 box as follows:
Inbound Rules:
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-in) Public Profile
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-in) Private Profile
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-in) Domain Profile
Outbound Rules:
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-Out) Public Profile
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-Out) Private Profile
Enable File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-Out) Domain Profile

This will allow you to ping any machine.

If you are using IPv6 then you need to enable the corresponding rules for IPv6.
