I need to upgrade one of my Server 2003 boxes from Standard to Enterprise in order to allow support for more than 4GB RAM (for SQL server needs). Do I just purchase Enterprise and install it right on top of my existing 2003 Standard box or is there more to it?

That is all you need to do, put the enterprise CD and upgrade. Obviously have a full backup first....

I would not purchase Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition right now, rather wait for Windows 2008 and SQL 2008 x64bit hopefully to be released February.

I thought RAM was more a 32bit 64bit issue.
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
32bit = 4GB RAM
64bit = 32GB RAM
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
32bit = 32GB RAM
64bit = 1 Terabyte (1024 GB)

hopefully to be released February.

I personally would not base my server/infrastructure on a hopeful Microsoft release date. If the requirement now is to have more RAM in this server than W2K3 Standard can handle then upgrading to Enterprise is the logical way to go

If it's been alright till now 3 months is not long to wait. I think if you have SA then yes I agree it would be the logical way to.

Thanks to all for the input. I need to increase my available RAM immediately so no time to wait for 2008.

Thanks again
