I have a 2003 server that is the domain controller with Active Directory. I have a 2003 server in another state that is a backup domain controller. I want to create another backup domain controller for another state on the same network and this computer has 2003 server on it as well. When I tell it to become a backup domain controller, it tells me that it has to prepare the forest for a 2003 server. Why? Everything is already 2003. Will it hurt anything if I say yes? How do you get a back up of the forest or active directory and should I say yes to the question?

Thanks in advance,
mlcz

Make sure you have all your service packs updated. I also get this warning just adding 2003 Enterprise to a 2003 Standard domain. It wants to add inheritable ACEs to the GPOs in the SYSVOL shared folder and synchronize the SYSVOL shared folder among the domain controllers in the domain. I have done this several times successfully. I have even done this when upgrading from W2K to 2003 domain. As always make sure you have full backups of everything before you start. Good Luck!!
