I hope i am in the right forum...

For my dns server i have my main domain name set for the first Forward Lookup in the forward lookup zones.

I am trying to set up name servers an for the most part i believe that all is well.

My question is for the name servers should these be CNames or should they be new domains under the main domain?

If a CName is an alias for a host name... what is a subdomain? Referred to as a new domain when i right click on the main doamin in the new zone i created..

Thanks a lot for any help
erik

If it's an AD integrated DNS, the name server records should automatically be added.

CNAMES are like nicknames. Let's say you have a machine with a long, or forgettable host name, like "dv7as90d87s987". Well, you'll never remember that, so you create a CNAME for "mymachine", and point it at the "dv7as90d87s987" host. Now you can access dv7as90d87s987 by using mymachine.

Right now i do not have AD set up.. I am going to start studying AD next week.

So for my CName of Dns1 -> Dns1.myHost.com is ok?

Ok here is where i am at this morning...

I have one lookup zone, and it is typed exactly like: afcc-inc.com. This is the domain i have reg at godaddy.com. I have an A record in afcc-inc.com that points to the same IP that the DNS server is on; which is just a LAN IP of 192.168.0.xx.

I have two CName set up that is typed exactly like: super1 and super2; both are pointing to the A address IP that i mentioned above.(I am just testing and learning here, this box is not in a production enviroment)

I have IIS 6.0 web server set up on this same machine also. At the register(godaddy.com) i have the DNS for afcc-inc.com set to super1.afcc-inc.com and super2.afcc-inc.com. When i type afcc-inc.com in the address bar i am able to receive the desired .html page on my machine from outside the network.(I have a dial up so i can get off this LAN and onto the WAN).

---So now i know that i have a domain name reg at godaddy by the name of afcc-inc.com and it is servering as the DNS name servers for my other doamin names. And i have checked it from the outside network.

***Here comes the issues***
I have a domain name by the name of projectmaterials.com and i have set it's DNS name server to super1.afcc-inc.com and super2.afcc-inc.com. I have also set up here locally in my IIS 6.0 webserver to display one .html page for projectmaterials.com.. In other words i have a web app by the name of projectmaterials.com with on .html page in it. Since i am sharing the same IP address for all of the web apps i am first checking the host headers from with in the IIS 6.0 so i know which web app to display.
The problem is that the projectmaterials web site is not displaying. I also had an error in my dns log this morning that read(Projectmaterials.com tried to send a packet to itself)
The only lookup name that i have created is the afcc-inc.com. I have never created a file for projectmaterials.com.

I am in need of some guidence here..

Do i need to create a domain under the afcc-inc.com????

Thanks for any help..

Erik
