I have a Dell PowerEdge server with Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise Ed) acting as a Domain/DHCP/DNS/Print/File server.
I need to move all files and settings over to a new HP PROLIANT G3 server which has Windows Server 2003 (Enterprise Ed)R2 version installed. All the drivers for the new server are installed and working fine.

I then need to de-commission the old Dell server. The new HP is literally replacing the Dell.

How would I go about doing this. Is there any websites that can provided a step by step type thing? I haven't really got a clue. Please help.

Is this your only domain controller at present? Can you give a bit more detail about your setup.

You will first need to 'prepare' Active directory by running adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep from the 2nd R2 cd.

Then
dcpromo new server to a domain controller in your domain
move dhcp database
transfer the fsmo roles
add dns server role to the new dc and if your dns zones are ad integrated they will replicate to the new dc
You can use print migrator to move printers
use something like robocopy to copy files to the new server, you can maintain your NTFS security settings by using robocopy.

Oh yeah, answer PCE's question first. Move info would be useful.

Porkchopexpress, yes this my only domain controller. I just need to move it to a new server (HP).

Pagy, do I need to run adprep on the new server or old server before i do the DCPROMO?

Thank you both for your time.

Nice link porkchop, I'd actually not seen that KB before about replacing a single dc.

When trying to add the new WS2003 Enterprise Ed (R2) I got this messgae below. Remember my old installation is only WS2003 Enterprise Ed. Not R2?

The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory Help.

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer.

I ran the adprep on the old server and it seemed to work fine. Is the problem with the different versions of 2003?

Did you run the Adprep that is on Windows Server 2003 R2 Disc 2, not the version that is on Disc 1?

adprep.exe /forestprep

My bad - it's working now. Running adprep from incorrect CD. Sorry
