server 2000 e-mail

from my reading and limited knowledge I have noticed that server 2000 has an smtp protocal loaded which if im correct would allow e-mail in a small workgroup to use internally. If I am right I cant figure out how to configure the client 2000 workstations to be able to utilize this feature. Please help in any way or just to tell me im way off. It just doesnt seem prudent for us to buy exchange when it's only 4 users.

check out pegasus mail. It's free. A newer version is coming out in July. I use it for 60 users on 2000 server.
