Serious Wireless Project

Hey all:

I have a serious wireless project that I am taking on, not necessarly because I would like too, but because I was told it couldn't be done.

Here's the scoop:

I live in a river valley, fairly wide ~ 6-7 mi and long maybe 10 -12 mi then rounds corners on either end for about 5 mi. I need to have a wireless system in place so that I can get my Pub Safety guys connected at high speed, while they are driving at high speed.

I would love to do this at 802.11b speeds, but I know it will suffer some because of coverage.

Any suggestions of vendors or projects you have heard of where I can get more information??

we had difficulty connecting to moving vehicles even in settings where, if stopped, they could connect.

You may wish to have cards that can trade radio power for battery power. many PCMCIA cards are 100mW or less to preserve batterys, but as an example you can get Symbol cards at 500mW to increase radio range. The Cisco 350 cards allow several power settings.

you can get 'omnidirectional' antennas with long range, they do not allow a very vertical terrain, however. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
 
That would be a tough solution. Wireless connections at 2.4 GHz or higher are strictly line-of-sight. Trees absorb the signal. A 900 MHz solution is non-line-of-sight, but I don't know if you can roam with this solution. That's my 2 cents worth. Good luck
 
tom, 2.4 Ghz and up is not necesarily line of sight. 802.11a and b both work fine through walls. at least at low speeds. but maybe gprs is a solution although it's only 50kbps
 
Hey all:

I have read some very interesting articles about this and believe it or not, there is a place, Yakima County, WA that has a 600 Sq. Mi wirelees 802.11b (secure) wireless WAN. Vehicles can connect at up to 70 MPH without dropping the connection. they can also store and forward if they hit a shadow in the coverage.

I have spoken with a few cisco people who have said "it can't be done" Little did they know it was their own technology that is doing it in Washington. Aiornet devices.
