I am in a severe need of help here; I just bought a brand new comp. (Athlon 2500+ barthon, Aopen AK79D-400VN, TwinMos 512mb DDR400, Club3D Ati Radeon 9600 pro, maxtor 80GB HD, SB 4.1 digital, LiteOn burner 52/32/52)
And I know what I am doing, so dont care about RTFM or any such.

My problem is twicefolded

1) The motherboard does not recognice my CPU as a 2500+, instead it calls it a "Athlon XP 1900+". And I have tried about everything; downloaded new Chipset drivers (Nvidia NForce2 ultra), updated BIOS, looked through faqs. But I cant solve the issue? What on EARTH should I do????

2) A downclocked CPU; I dont like, but I can live with. BUT this damn computer reboots at RANDOM. I have XP corp pro SP1 installed.(re installed it 7times) and I have tried to figure out what on earth could be the cause, but I cant figure it out :(

My kingdom for some help.

The FSB reads 133.. but changeing it also clocks up my memory to DDR5XX

And I am pretty sure the heat sink is properly installed.... at least the CPU runs at 40c and a sys temp of 32 c

Your reboot issue could be a sign that it is infected with the MSBlast virus. You should make sure you have the MS03-026 patch installed and run a virus scan.

I apologize for not asking the right question, though I think the result will be the same. In BIOS, what does your CPU Bus Frequenncy read? Again, it should be 166 with a multiplier of 11.

Tnx, but "been there, done that"

It aint blaster..

Oh, np! I am thankful for any suggestions I get :)

I fixed that now.. thanx for the help!

Your welcome. Next, what is your RAM clocking at now? Though your have DDR400, your default clock will be 2 X FSB (2 X 166) so it should be at DDR333.

A new system rebooting at random sounds like Windows XP
simplification 'features.' Where in the past windows
would display a BSOD and ask you to restart, win XP now
restarts immediately on default.
What you want to do is disable reboot on Blue Screen of Death so you can see the actual error messages causing this problem. MSBlast overloads the RPC process which gives you a 60 second countdown, so it's not that. Right Click on My Computer, and select properties. From there navagate to the advanced troubleshooting options. If possible turn off auto-reboot, and have it make a core dump or something, if you're feeling adventureous.

Otherwise, if you've already eliminated this as a possibility... Hmm... I'll leave it to you Overclockers
out there who've dealt with buggy CPU's. If it's not
bsoding.

Not recommending overclocking here at all. Just trying to get the CPU and memory clocked properly. So far the CPU was clocked wrong, so no telling what the memory was being clocked at. Hopefully getting the clocking correct will fix the reboot problems.

The CPU is working fine now...
But I still get the horrible STOP AT: 0x000000XX bsod messages...

Got to suspect faulty memory (however new or whatever quality it is)
See if a mate can lend you a stick from a system without issues.

I've run the memtests now, and there are errors encountered (on test #6,9,11... I think)

Does that mean my RAM is defect and needs to be replaced? or is it the motherboard which is defect?

Faulty memory is faulty memory, I seiously dought it's a motherboard issue.
If the 512 is two sticks then try one at a time.

Hehe. yeah, i know what you mean..

Nope. the mem is double-sided 512... so it is definetly toast?
Ok, well I got the comp like three days ago.. :S I guess I'll have to send the mem back, and wait for another week till I get started :p

Your board supports dual-channel, so you may be better off getting two 256MB sticks rather than one 512MB in order to take advantage of this.

Have you ever loaded Setup Defaults from with BIOS setup? Can't hurt to try if not. After doing this you may have to manually set your CPU Bus Frequency again.

Have loaded the default several times... no luck there

Dual channel... hmmm damn why didn't I think of that when I ordered the comp?
