Serious issue - Locked out of database

I have a serious problem. I was securing SQL Server 2000 and I checked the option to "Force protocol encryption". I attempted to restart the sql service and it wouldn't work. I then unchecked the option to "Force protocol encryption". When I try and access the database (which does ALL of our student management functions) it gives me the error message "a connection could not be established to (LOCAL) Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied".

and found out that i needed a certificate to force protocol encryption. I installed a certificate and rechecked "force protocol encryption" but then I just couldn't start the sql service after stopping it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks mrdenny for the reply but I fixed it. When you enforce protocol encryption on a sql server, you have to have a server certificate in the local machine's certificate folder. I had a certificiate in the local machine's folder and my user folder. sql was getting confused about which one to use.
