Afternoon All -

I currently have a fleet of 1720, 1721 and one 1760 series Cisco Routrs, IOS version 12.3 with WIC 1DSU T1 cards handling frame relay.

I am considering switching to MPLS later this year. Am I able to reuse my existing hardware with MPLS or would I need new routers and/or interface cards?

Hello
It all depends on how the provider will deliver the MPLS VPN.If the PE (provider edge)will be speaking BGP with the CE (customer edge),you will have to change the 1720's if I remember correctly they can't run BGP.If using static routes or EIGRP you will have no problems.

A lot of times the provider will just supply you a fastethernet connection to plug in .

Minue is right, it depends on the vendor. I know AT&T usually has you connect to their network via BGP, which they will install a smartjack in your network closet (or min. point of entry, just depends on the installation tech), from there you will take it to the DSU card on your 1760. I would recommend upgrading your 1720/21 to atleast 1760's anyways, the 1760's are really decent routers and they are also rack mountable where as the 1720/21's are not...

Hello Burt
I have seen or heard much about "frame mode MPLS". Most clients will be looking connect all their sites at layer 3.Better pricing and easier configuration.
