Hi All,
I need to transfer huge volume of data from one sun server to another and I don't want to transfer it thru network. Is it possible to connect the two servers serially and transfer data?If yes, then what all configuration changes are to be made and how fast is the data transfer rate?
Any help would be appreciated?

A huge amount of data would take a very huge amount of time if you use the serial line option.

How about unplugging them both from the network and using a cross-over cable to network the two boxes together. That way you are isolated from any networks and have a much faster link than a serial line would provide.

The maximum configuration changes necessary would be adding the appropriate entries, on both hosts, in /etc/hosts, /etc/defaultrouter, /etc/netmask. I can't think of any more.

Ask your network admin for a X-O or cross-over cable.

Good luck Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life

I think his point was that he didn't want to make the servers unavailable. I know we've done something like that here...I'll ask around. What kind of solaris boxes?

Hi All,
Thanks for u'r replies. But I don't want to disconnect either of the two servers from the network as Mike has exactly understood. The servers we r talking about are two E220R.However the cross cable option can also be worked out as I have 2 N/W cards ,one of which is unused. Is this possible?
Thanx once again...

Hey guys,
Any ideas about serial connection......

am working on a script for you navinb. Hope to have it posted by sunday or so.

Mike

scratch that script thing. I walked into work today to find that they had 'requisitioned' my other sun box. Sorry 'bout that.

Mike

Hi guys,
I just found out that one can connect two sun servers using serial port and then use 'tip connection' to talk to each other. Is this correct? In this case, what are the files that need to be modified?
Waiting for u'r replies...
Thanx...

iu shud specify either a hostname or how u want to connect to the reomte syste.this cud be hostname, phone number or device name.
in ur case it is goin to be hostname

if a host name is specified the wtc.remote file is earched for an entry with maching name.

but i advice u configure the other NIC to connect to the other machineusing a cross over cable to connect to the other machine because if u are going to use serial cable it will take a very long time..

sendhil

sorry that was a typo error the file that will be searched is /etc/remote file

If you are connecting from one computer to another then use a crossover, Null modem, cable from the good machine use TTYB and from the other use TTYA. open a terminal window on good machine and type in tip hardwire. This will set up a serial communications link from one machine to another.

How about taking the second NIC card in each machine and setting it to a 192.168.x.x address and trasferring the data over that network. The other cards stay on the production network, and your data moves over a private network. JW
