Serialized Inventory Setup Assistance

Hello,
I am new to tracking serialized inventory. The question I have is if there is a way to specify the manufacturers serial numbers only. We are only going to serialize the more expensive pieces of inventory and will need to reference their number when doing warranty claims or repairs. It seems to make sense that we reference as few numbers as possible without adding more serial/lot numbers to muddy the water. Does anyone know if this is possible and what needs to be done. Any assistance that can be offered is greatly appreciated.

You might look at a Flex app or a MS SQL Trigger to work around the system assigning an internal part serial number in addition to the vendor serial number. Do you have a specific scenario with a little more detail on the process you want to put into place....

I think you would just set the numeric portion to 0, use a alpha numeric portion, and just use the Mfg's serial number as your serial number.
