I have a customer that disconnected and replaced a serial printer with the same type and now it does not print. The other 2 printer of the same type work on thier tty's. The serial settings on the printer are correct. A system reboot did not make any difference.

Can someone tell what to do, to get it printing again.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Lpstat -t as root should show if you have spooler problems.

How about putting one of the working printers on the port to help identify if the printer or port is the problem.

I would be suspicious of the serial settings, or of the parallel/serial choice.

1) Get a cheap serial break out box and check pins 2 3 7 & 20 in particular are pins 2 & 3 correct? or do you need a null modem adaptor.

2) DISABLE ttyport # disable /dev/ttyxx

3) go to unix prompt and cat file directly to break out box (Printer not connected) ie: # cat /.profile > /dev/ttyxx do the LED's flash? if not hardware or cable problem if it does go to # 4

4) connect printer and cat file to printer cat /.profile > /dev/ttyxx. Does it print? Yes, unix and hardware ok

5) Check lp services lp -dprintername /.profile should work

good luck

if you need more help do above steps and respond with results. Without a breakout box to start you don't have a chance of getting this working. Radio Shack sells one for about $8.00.

"now it does not print" - does the job go away or does the spooler think the printer has a fault?

"The serial settings on the printer are correct." - does this include the flow control settings? DTR/DSR CTS/RTS

I ran the lpstat -t all the printers are showing up as idle, enabled, and available.
I will be going on site tomorrow to test the serial port. I do have a BO box. One note the customer has stated that this has happened before and someone had to reset the printer from the OS, but does not know what command was used.

Thanks for all the help. Will be updating tomorrow.

disable printername then enable printername

But if it was a hung printer the jobs should be queing in the spooler and showing on the lpstat.

The problem turns out that the business owner, a doctor MD played with the printer and got the serial setting all messed up. After correcting the setting and doing a disable and enable the printer was working again. I wish that they had told me this at the start.

Thanks for all the help

They have the feelings that they know everything. It is a continuing source of laughs with their support people.
I tell the office managers that I charge more for doctor created problems, that seems to help.
