Serial Port Shutdown problem

I have a PC (IBM netvista running XP) which has a palm sync device plugged into its serial port, on shutdown the PC restarts. If I disconnect the device from the serial port it shuts down fine - from reading other questions on the site I have set the PC not to auto restart on error, but no blue error screen. I guess it is a conflict of some sort or another however there is no modem, printer, inferred port or other comms device connected to it, when it is plugged in it also works fine.

Has anyone got any ideas how I need to tweak the PC so that it stays shut down with the device attached??

Cheers

Power Management options in the Control Panel need to be set to shutdown..
and the BIOS wake-on states all need to be disabled.

I went into the BIOS and changed some of the power settings to Disabled and it seems to have done the job thanks.
