Hi all,

I'm trying to find an external serial modem for use with SBS 2k3. I have found plenty but none of them mention Windows 2003 in the compatibility list, does anyone have one which they installed and works ok?

The customers current one is a Hayes Accura v92 External Modem but whenever you dial a number it gives the BSOD!!

Thanks.

I'm sure you have the answer for this it's more a personal knowledge question...why do you not use an internal PCI hardware modem? Are they in short supply these days?

I personally never use an internal modem as the only way to reset it is a computer shutdown ...
I've a lot of customers using the US Robotics FaxModem without issue.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Why not an internal modem ?...
In 25 years working with networks I seen a number of servers fry from lightning (even with telco surge protection and added customer surge protection), >90% of them were equipped with internal modems. Rarely does an external modem pass high discharge voltage up through a serial cable; generally external modems melt or burn, a voltage arc find a ground easily, internals just let the arc jump to the slot pins after the tiny built in surge protector vaporizes.
US Robotics were the best, not sure about the present.

Hi,

It is definatly a driver issue on Windows 2003 Server.

I have installed the modem on a seperate server and it does exactly the same, BSOD.

New modem has been ordered which claims to be compatable!!

The reason external is being used is because I have specific software which looks for it on a COM port and it is easily reset.

Thanks.

...and thanks to PHV, technome, and gavm99 for providing the "extra information" I was seeking. Every single point made sense.
