Serial Mice Dieing

Have you opened one up and investigated the mechanics, simple though that may be.
You can have opto isolator problems or you can have mechanical problems. Dust will affect the signal transitions by reducing the light passed.
Then again, their breed is at the end of their evolutionary branch and they may be dying from lonliness. If you are planning on using a serial mouse much longer I suggest that you procure a stash of spares.
