I have my SQL cluster deployed and a single default instance. I am currently deploying OCS and have read a few postings online about dedicating an instance to OCS. I am wondering if I need to also dedicate an instance to Sharepoint (MOSS 2007) which I will deploy in a few weeks after I'm done with OCS.

Any thoughts?

You should be fine using your cluster. At a previous site, I just deployed SharePoint (MOSS 2007) to the default cluster which was attached to a SAN and everything worked fine. Be aware, however, that SharePoint creates various database (the number varies dependent on your farm configuration), so you may want to document which databases exist on the cluster before the SharePoint setup so that you know which databases are set up by and belong to SharePoint.

I haven't worked with SharePoint 2010 yet, so I don't know the recommended topologies for it. If you are looking to upgrade anytime soon, you may want to research further.

I am not a big SQL guy, but I've been able to deploy a 2-node cluster attached to a HP LeftHand SAN by myself. I didn't even know what another instance was until I started to research it online. I just find it an odd thought to be able to install SQL all over again on the same box and it be a completely separate install/instance. I think what I'll do for now is create another volume off of my SAN and mountpoint to it from my Sharepoint so I can keep some organization of those databases like you mention, but maintain on the default instance for now. The Sharepoint for me, for now, will be more of a pilot for my admin users. If everything goes well and it gets utilized like it should, then I'll go back and "tweek" this issue.

Thanks.
