can not connect to smtp server. It was working fine on 9-5-08. It just stoped working. I can send and receive form the server but not the clients. I can receive email sent by the server cmd line to a client but that is it.

Try and "telnet servername 25" from a relaying client to see if it brings up a prompt.

If it does, you can spoof up a mail letter and see if it accepts it.

no i can not telnet server 25. unable to connect.

Then either the process has died, or you are blocking it either with a firewall or software firewall.

Does the sendmail process appear? Remember, a client on that machine does not need to talk to the daemon process, they invoke mailing by themselves.

Try:

netstat -an | grep 25 | grep -i list

Is anything listening on port 25?

netstat -an | grep 25 | grep -i list
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:25 0.0.0.0:* Listen
4469 root 09:46 sendmail: accepting connections
4478 smmsp 09:46 sendmail: Queue runner@01:00:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue

You are only listening to localhost, so something has changed on what ip address you are binding on.

I am not sure i am a newbie and was stuck with this problem

Not sure what distribution you have but look at your sendmail.mc file

If it looks like this it will only listen on the loacl loopback
dnl # The following causes sendmail to only listen on the IPv4 loopback address
dnl # 127.0.0.1 and not on any other network devices. Remove the loopback
dnl # address restriction to accept email from the internet or intranet.
dnl #
dnl # DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl
---------------------------------

You want it to look like this
dnl #
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp, Name=MTA')dnl

elgrandeperro is right. Your server seems to be listening on the loopback device. However your .mc file seems to be ok. My guess is that sendmail has be restarted with a funky sendmail.cf. To check this create a new sendmail.cf from this sendmail.mc file. Here is the command to do that:

m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf

Then restart sendmail:

service sendmail restart

Then run netstat -an|grep 25 againd and see what it says.
