Currently clients connect to our mailserver via client (Traditional approach).

Is there a web tool available that hooks into sendmail that allows users to:
1) Manage their email much like a mail.yahoo.com or hotmail.com.
2) Allows an adminstrator to manage the size limitations of via html tool.

Suggestions welcome? I'm getting tired of client server apps.

i use neomail ... there are others out there as well ...

i know of someone who uses something called 'Squirrelmail'

there is also a script i found called 'oakmailer' but it's very basic.

I use squirrelmail and have been for over a year. Very nice and customizable. I have a Calendar, Weather, ability to change email password for the remote users, set a vacation message and many other features. I move from Neomail to this. Neomial is good as well, but very basic.

PS:Uses IMAP (Hotmail..yahoo)

Do either neomail or squirrelmail have a bar showing how much alotted space the user has used?

Also, to be clear, the programs run on the email server and are accessed via any browers (netscape, ie, etc.) from any type of computer... correct?

Lastly, what is your install base. Are these programs being used on a small network (less than 50) or a medium to (50-500 users)?

THanks,

I use Squirelmail on a system with only 20 users, have seen it on larger systems, SQ can be a resource hog (neomail for the mases and very easy) you can go to suirrelmail.org and check out the plugins not sure about quota display though.

SQ on enguard,RH and HP-UX works great
NeoMail only on RH and it worked great to

Don't gforget openwebamil as well.

SQ is PHP and has worked from Solaris,Winx,WinNTFS, HP, Linux,PocketPC 2002,CE and it works on the SL5500. 8)

i only use neomail because i wanted it to run on Solaris 7 and i couldn't get the Berkeley Database modules to compile, which i believe you need for squirrelmail.

almost all of our users access mail any other way than neomail, but neomail is quick and works for any of our users that only have access to a web browser.

the easiest one i've ever used was the 'oakmailer' one ... but it had limitations with attachments ... it left them on the server, and theoretically i guess it would be possible for other people to view attachments left on the disk.

what is your server running OS wise?

I used squrriel mail and it works just fine with plenty of features and plugin available. Fot alotted bar, you can look for the plugin disk quota or something like quota usage depends on how you set up your quota.

I setup my quota based on the quota module of my solaris 8. And I am using the squrriel mail with sendmail and the uw imap that I download from becuase of the ease of setup.

But I heard that courier imap with maildrop can boost your performance. I did tried for days but can't get the courier imap works so I give-up. Also you can try the php-accelerator but I also failed with strange response. I don't know if it is related to misconfiguration that I have done.

For the performance, I don't have much to say but I also found that my setup is not performing very well. For I hav ecompiled my apache with php and mmap_static. Besides, I have also disabled all other option (including DSO) that might affect the perofmrnace. While I am using a SUNFire V120 to support for about 400 user and don't know if it is the root cause.

For the neomail, does anyone have a links to their home page. I would like to check out the features available.

Having glanced thru the neo mail web site.

All I can say is go for squirrel mail if you want to have a complete solution for the huge base of plugin avaialble and just think of the extendability that plugin can give you.

For the speed, I guess you can buy back with better CPU, Motherboard, RAM and optimization. You can also consider to install these stuff on a BSD and heard that it is the fastest OS you can go for.

i never could get Squirrel mail to work on my box ... probably cos i was running an old Solaris 7 box, without any of the GNU tools on it.

couldn't get the BerkeleyDB stuff to compile :)

Has anyone taken the approach of:

Sendmail on box A and Squirrelmail on Box B?

This would allow a greater level of security...but unfortunately also more complexity.

Should be able to do it since it asks for the server in which to IMAP to So you could run the http squirrelmail on one server and connect to a diff sendmail server. But you'll
have to open you sendmail server to relay and allow the squirrelmail server
