Setting up a server running CentOS, sendmail, and Dovecot.

Users can connect using IMAP and POP to download email, but when sending it does not authenticate users.

The proper ports are open on the firewall, and using an IP address or a domain name doesn't matter, so DNS MX records are working.

What am I missing? why won't Sendmail authenticate SMTP.
Firefox on my Ubuntu laptop connects, and asks for a password, but it never authenticates. I have checked the passwords for the users and they are correct.

Assuming that you do not enjoy suffering, you probably are using sendmail.mc to configure your server.

Have you correctly enabled authentication for relay in mc file?
Are you usign plain text or SSL authentication?

Send more info.

Life is what happens when you are making other plans.

Check to see that you have these lines in sendmail.mc:
Code:
TRUST_AUTH_MECH(`EXTERNAL DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl
define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `EXTERNAL GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl

Also make sure that saslauthd is running. If you have to make changes to sendmail.mc, don't forget to run m4.
