What do these packages essentially do for you?

Would relaying not be possible because the client would have to be authorized? Would the client need a certificate to read/send mail?

Would the ISP have to know about this setup?
Thanks in advance.

the way smtp-auth and pop-before-smtp work is "ALL" relaying is denied except for authenticated connections.

In other words.

You will not be able to send mail, until after you check you account for mail.

Once you check your mail you usually have a 15-30 min window to send mail before having to check it again.

I usually have users set up thier client to check mail every 10-15 min so that they are well within the threshold

Thanks, so Netscape/MS Outlook options have to reflect these features also.

If I set up certificates, then that also works pretty much the same way in that each client will need certificate information to send/read email from my server.
