If you say "outside the network" are you dialling into the office or are you dialing into an ISP and accessing the server over the internet? Is there a fire wall/proxy server in between?

Best advise I can give at this stage is to double check that the client is using port 25, that you are using a registered IP address if going over the internet (looks like you are if POP3 is working ok), that port 25 is open on the fire wall or check to see if your proxy server can NAT to the mail server, make sure your server is listening on port 25

Check access to that port from the "outside" by doing this:

telnet server.com 25

If you get a header with the MTA's identification, then the firewall is passing traffic to the server. Bruce Garlock
