Symptoms:

Long times to retrieve mail.
Long delays to login.
mailq hangs
netstat hangs
Many users cannot "sendmail". IP layer seems ok, no problem with pings. DNS looks ok as well.
rebooted several times (2-3 minutes to start sendmail services).

Any help ideas appreciated.

Thanks

top reveals that things may be ok (pasted below):
1:52pm up 27 min, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
71 processes: 70 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 1.8% user, 1.3% system, 0.0% nice, 96.7% idle
Mem: 126628K av, 116456K used, 10172K free, 0K shrd, 22456K buff
Swap: 530104K av, 0K used, 530104K free 54340K cached

It's a resolver/DNS problem.

Make sure sendmail can resolve it's own host and domain name and it's ip number correctly.
